Comic Con, What is it, Why & Where?

San Diego Comic Con, is one of the largest if not, the largest pop culture event in the world, and has become a mecca for fans of comic books, movies, TV shows, video games, and all things geeky & nerdy. In this segment, we will explore the history of Comic Con, what it means to fans, and why people make the pilgrimage every year from all over the world.

Comic Con, short for Comic Convention, was first held in 1970 in San Diego, California. The convention was created by a group of comic book fans who wanted to bring together like-minded individuals to celebrate their favourite characters and stories. The first Comic Con had around 300 attendees, and it was primarily focused on comic books and science fiction.

Over the years, Comic Con grew in popularity, with more and more people attending each year. The convention expanded to include movies, TV shows, video games, and other pop culture events. Today, Comic Con is a global phenomenon, with conventions held all over the world, from the original location of San Diego to newer Locations like New York & London.

Whilst there are various locations to attend an official Comic Con, the San Diego location is always the most desired & promising. In previous years big names such as Keanu Reeves, Ben Stiller & Robert Downey Jr have been in attendance at the San Diego Comic Con & regular guests such as Kevin Smith, William Shatner, Patrick Stewart & even Stan Lee would host meet & greet booths there. It is the event of all geek events, the Mecca, the OG & many fans eagerly await the news on who will be attending that year.

For many fans, Comic Con is a chance to be part of a community of like-minded individuals. It’s an opportunity to meet people who share the same interests and passions and to celebrate their fandom together. Fans come to Comic Con to see or even meet their favourite actors, artists, and writers, attend panels, buy merchandise, and immerse themselves in the world of pop culture.

For some, Comic Con is more than just a convention – it’s a way of life. Fans spend months preparing their costumes, or cosplay, and creating elaborate displays for the convention. Cosplay is probably one of the biggest parts, with fans dressing up as their favourite characters and parading around the convention centre, bumping into others similarly dressed, recreating famous scenes from their favourite films or sometimes even famous memes.

People & fans make the pilgrimage to San Diego Comic Con every year for a variety of reasons. For some, it’s a chance to escape their everyday lives and immerse themselves in a world of fantasy and adventure. For others, it’s an opportunity to meet their favourite idols, attend exclusive panel discussions, and get a sneak peek at upcoming movies and TV shows.

The future of Comic Con looks bright, with conventions continuing to be held all over the world year after year. And as pop culture continues to grow in popularity, so do Comic Cons. The convention is constantly evolving and expanding, with new events, activities, and guest lineups being added every year.

Comic Con doesnt just have to be held in San Diego, Wherever you are in the world there will always smaller & more local comic cons to attend with a similar vibe that San Diego started, for fans to escape & see what they can add to a collection or to meet friends & other fans of their favourite franchise.
